Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Day on the Hill?
An organized day for MCCA members to come to the Capitol and personally meet their local legislators, see the legislative process in action during early childhood hearings, network with other providers, and more.

Do I have to spend the whole day at the Capitol?
No, but you’re encouraged to spend as much of the day there as possible. There will be plenty to do between hearings, meetings with legislators (the most important part!), tours of the beautifully-restored Minnesota State Capitol, legislators and staff key to child care issues coming to speak to our group, and of course lunch.

What if I don’t feel like I know what to do with legislators, or where to go?
The Capitol can be intimidating, but we don’t want it to be: it’s our house! For those of you who have never come to the Capitol or spoken with your elected officials, this is a fun and low-stress way to do it. MCCA Government Relations staff will provide talking points and materials, set up meetings, and will even accompany you if possible and desired. If multiple members from your area attend, we will set up small group meetings with your legislators. We will also provide an agenda for the day pointing you towards child care-related events of interest.

How much does this cost?
The event is FREE to MCCA members, and will include lunch. Mileage and parking are the responsibility of the member.

Does this really make a difference?
YES. You are your local officials’ VIPs. The fact that you took the time to come see them in person makes you stand out. Most people never get involved. And legislators can only make decisions based on what they hear from constituents that ARE involved.
